Kathryn H Bowles
Kathryn (Kathy) H Bowles, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI is the vanAmeringen Professor in Nursing Excellence at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and Director of the Center for Home Care Policy and Research at the Visiting Nurse Service of New York. Dr. Bowles’ program of research and expertise in transitional care, decision support, home care, and the electronic health record has been continuously funded for over 20 years by federal and foundation sources. She has over 200 publications and presentations and has served on many national and international committees and workgroups to advance the care of older adults and the development of the electronic health record.
Dr. Bowles was an invited consultant on the Improving Safe Transitions Technical Expert Panel for CMS; served as a Care Coordination Steering Committee member of the National Quality Forum, and was appointed to the CMS sponsored Technical Expert Panel to develop measures for transitions in care. She was invited by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and the Academy of Medicine to serve on the Decision Support Workgroup. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), the American College of Medical Informatics (FACMI), Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society and Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.
In 2011, Dr. Bowles Co-founded RightCare Solutions, a software company based on her team’s research on post-acute care referral decision making. RightCare was acquired by naviHealth, a Cardinal Health company in 2015. Current work focuses on implementing a second generation decision support tool, DIRECT, that identifies patients for post-acute referral and recommends the level of care.
